I think the CCC was a little miffed that the city never really endeavored to answer that question in a serious way. If the smoke has a real, demonstrated, negative health effect on those living near the fire rings, then I think there should be serious discussion removing, or perhaps altering the fire rings. If, however, there are real health issues, than I take the concerns more seriously. Those homeowners are welcome to move, and I'm sure there will be no shortage of buyers for a house in such a prime location. Personally, I don't think those tourists and families should have to give up that fantastic recreational option because a handful of nearby homeowners are annoyed by the smell. These fire rings have been used by generations of tourists and local families to enjoy a bonfire. It's like moving next to an airport, and then demanding they limit flights, or moving next to a baseball stadium and demanding that they restrict parking.

I don't think it is fair to knowingly move to a place that is enjoyed by thousands or even millions of visitors, and then expect that those large number of visitors need to bend to make your life slightly more comfortable. But, the rich people (or less rich, who rent) that live in CDM and Balboa, have made the decision to forgo space and quiet to enjoy the other benefits afforded by beach living. There are plenty of other nice places to live in OC, places like Coto De Caza, Newport Coast etc., that offer space and quiet. But, we all made a decision that the benefits of living near the water, living in a place that many can only hope to visit a few days a year, outweigh those downsides. These are all products of the fact that we live in a place that many others like to spend their recreation time. There are lots of annoying things living near the beach. If the issue is simply that nearby residents are annoyed by the smell, then I am less sympathetic. I actually don't mind it, it feels like summer/beach to me. I've never lived super close to fire pits, but know the characteristic scent of the fire pits. I grew up in CDM and have lived in Balboa for over a decade.
